Why Aren’t My Student Loans Covered by Pres. Biden’s Freeze?

👀Q1: Are Parent Plus Loans covered by Pres. Biden’s student loan suspension?

A: It depends. If your Parent Plus Loans are owned by the Department of Education, then, yes, your loans are covered. But if they’re owned by a guaranty agency, then, no, your loans aren’t covered. Call your servicer to find out who owns your loans.

Q2: Why aren’t my student loans covered by Pres. Biden’s freeze?

A: Your federal student loans aren’t covered because your loans are not owned by the Department of Education. Yes, your loans are federal student loans, but no, your loans aren’t owned by the Department. Your loans are owned by a guaranty agency. Because of that, your loans don’t qualify for the freeze.

Q3: What are my options after I default on a private student loan?

Contact your servicer to see if you’re eligible for a deferment/forbearance or interest rate reduction plan. You could also see if they’ll accept a lump sum payment to catch up the missed payments. If those aren’t options, you’re looking at trying to negotiate a settlement or filing bankruptcy.
